Surf, Swim and Soak Up Summer in Port Fairy

Discover Port Fairy’s best beaches and surf spots for warm-weather swims, coastal walks and laid-back summer sessions.

Port Fairy is a must on any Great Ocean Road itinerary, with its perfect mix of beaches, easy surf and coastal calm. Whether you’re after waves, paddling or simply a peaceful swim, this small coastal town has options for all kinds of water-lovers. What makes Port Fairy special is the mix of easy, welcoming surf conditions and the kind of coastline where you can wander for hours. Some beaches are child-friendly and sheltered. It is the kind of place where you can surf in the morning, take a walk into town, grab food, and head back to the beach for a swim in the afternoon.

The Best Surf Spots in Port Fairy

East Beach: the classic Port Fairy surf

If you ask locals where they first learned to surf, most will tell you it was East Beach. It has a long stretch of sand, plenty of room and a friendly feel. The waves tend to be gentle and steady, which is why it is such a favourite with beginners. Surfers can find big waves and little waves at East Beach.

East Beach is also the place for long beach walks, early-morning dips and kids learning to read the ocean.

The Passage: for confident surfers

The Passage is the more advanced surf spot in town. It suits confident surfers who know how to read conditions and handle stronger waves. It can offer good, powerful surf when the swell is right. It is not a beginner area, but experienced surfers love it for the challenge. It is shaped by reef, rock and shifting currents, which is why seasoned surfers respect it and treat it with caution.

Surf Lessons, Board Hire and Ocean Experiences

Port Fairy is a great place for beginners to get on a board. If surfing is not your thing, you can rent stand-up paddleboards or simply swim or snorkel. For a first-time surfer, join one of the surf schools for the best experience. With both of Port Fairy’s Surf Schools, you will get support from qualified, experienced and friendly surf guides who will ensure that you are safe, having fun, and catching those waves!

  • Port Fairy Surf School – Port Fairy’s longest running surf school, catering for kids and beginners, services both Port Fairy and Warrnambool. They offer snorkeling, paddleboarding, kayaking, surfing lessons and surfboard hire.
  • Go Surf Port Fairy – They offer surf and stand up paddleboarding in Port Fairy, Warrnambool and Cape Bridgewater. They also have surf groms available for kids aged 5-12 years during summer.

Beyond Surfing: Calm Beaches and Hidden Corners

Not every beach in Port Fairy is about waves. Some are made for exploring rock pools, floating peacefully, or finding a quiet patch of sand away from the breeze.

  • Pea Soup – Loved by families, Pea Soup is shallow, sheltered and reef-protected. The water is usually clear and calm, and the rock pools are a magnet for curious kids. It’s calm even when the surf beaches pick up.
  • South Beach – Another gentle option, South Beach is where people go to read, nap, splash in the shallows or snorkel on a calm day. It is simple and beautiful, with that unmistakable Port Fairy stillness.
  • South Mole Beach – A peaceful swimming spot with generally smaller, softer waves. Good if you want to float, cool off or avoid stronger surf.

Top tips for beginner surfers

  • Take time to understand the ocean before heading out. Check conditions, watch the waves, and be aware of currents, tides and other water users.
  • Starting with a lesson is strongly recommended. Qualified instructors provide a safer introduction to surfing and help build confidence from the outset.
  • Falling off is part of learning. Knowing how to fall safely and protect yourself and others is just as important as standing up.
  • Progress comes with practice, patience and respect for the ocean.
  • Always surf within your ability, follow local advice, and if conditions don’t feel right, sit it out.
