At first glance, Terang might seem like a classic Western District town; wide streets, heritage shopfronts, the open sky stretching endlessly above paddocks and pastures. But slow down, take a stroll through the town, and another layer of Terang reveals itself. This is a town quietly telling its stories through street art, bold, thoughtful, and deeply connected to place.
In recent years, street art has become one of the most engaging ways regional towns express identity, history, and pride. Terang’s murals don’t shout for attention; instead, they invite you to look closer. They reward curiosity. Each painted wall feels like part conversation, part memory.
The Murals of Jess Fowler: A Signature Style in Terang
A central figure in Terang’s street art journey is local artist Jess Fowler, whose large‑scale murals have become some of the town’s most recognisable and photographed works. Based on High Street, Jess is known for her bright, bold depictions of Australian birds, animals, and flora. Artworks designed to lift spirits and create instant connection.
One of her most prominent contributions is the Terang Visitor Information Centre mural, completed in 2023 in partnership with the Rotary Club of Terang. Spanning multiple sides of the distinctive building on High Street, the mural features a series of native birds; cockatoos, kookaburras, blue wrens and galahs, something vivid and welcoming from every direction.
Fowler’s relationship with Terang began earlier, painting her first mural in 2021and continues today. Across Fowler’s Terang murals, a consistent philosophy emerges: art should be visible, joyful, and shared. Her choice to paint in public, welcoming conversation and feedback as she works, has strengthened the sense of community ownership around each piece and reinforced street art as something deeply local.

Walking along High Street or ducking down laneways, murals appear unexpectedly, transforming blank brick walls into moments of pause. Some are large and dramatic, impossible to miss. Others are smaller, tucked behind cafés, shops, or community buildings, waiting to be discovered.
These works add warmth and personality to everyday spaces. A once‑forgettable corner becomes a photo stop. A faded wall becomes a landmark. For locals, the art reflects familiar stories; for visitors, it offers a welcoming introduction to what Terang values.
Street art has become a subtle but powerful drawcard for Terang. Visitors stopping for coffee or passing through are encouraged to linger, wander, and explore.
The Commercial Hotel itself has evolved into a creative hub, hosting artist residencies, live music, writing, exhibitions and community events. The Corner Gallery acts as a visual anchor to that broader vision, reinforcing Terang’s growing reputation as a town where creativity is lived, not just displayed. Together with the surrounding murals, it contributes to a walkable arts experience that links painted exteriors with intimate interior viewing.
