Whale watching in the Otways

The Otways coastline offers incredible whale watching opportunities from June to October, with Southern Right Whales, Humpbacks, Orcas, and Blue Whales passing through the region.

Southern Right Whale

  • Length: 16–18m
  • Lifespan: Up to 70 years
  • Status: Least Concern
    Southern Rights migrate to the Otways to calve, often spotted close to shore.

Humpback Whale

  • Weight: 40 tonnes
  • Length: 14–16m
  • Lifespan: 45–100 years
  • Status: Least Concern
    Known for their breaches, Humpbacks travel through the region, using their massive tail fins to propel themselves out of the water.

Orca

  • Weight: 5.5 tonnes
  • Length: 8.5–10m
  • Lifespan: 50–90 years
  • Status: Endangered
    Orcas are powerful predators, hunting in pods. They are occasionally spotted off the Otways coast.

Blue Whale

  • Weight: 150–180 tonnes
  • Length: 31–33.5m
  • Lifespan: Up to 80 years
  • Status: Endangered
    The Blue Whale is the largest animal on Earth, but sightings are rare due to their solitary nature.

Best Spot: Cape Otway Lightstation
The Cape Otway Lightstation offers breathtaking views and is a prime spot for whale watching. From the rugged cliffs, you can often see Southern Right Whales and other species as they migrate along the coast.
