Find out where the Chef and Owner of Brae likes to eat in Birregurra
Perhaps the best thing about being a chef in Birregurra is having access to the Otways and Surf Coast, for access to nature and quality fresh produce from land and sea. Dan Hunter at Brae, has his own extensive market garden at his 20-acre Brae Farm and what he doesn’t grow there, he sources locally, making it easy for him to keep his menu seasonal and local. Running a restaurant, organic farm and guest suites in this part of the Great Ocean Road region also means he’s part of a very talented and innovative hospitality industry.
When he’s not working in the Brae kitchen, he’s trying the tastes and flavours of local cafes, restaurants and breweries run by his peers in and around Birregurra. Here are 5 of Dan’s favourite places he thinks you should try, too:
Birregurra
1. Otway Artisan Gluten Free
It’s a bit of a surprise to most that our tiny town of Birregurra has a gluten-free bakery. I drop in here weekly for lunch, even though I’m not gluten intolerant. They do great panini, cakes and slices and the best coffee in town. We always have their pizza bases in the freezer at home for a quick hassle-free dinner as well.

2. Local Markets
If you happen to be in Birregurra on the second Sunday of the month, the Birregurra Market will be on in the park. It’s a great chance to pick up locally grown garlic, olive oil, preserves, pastries, fresh local fish and other produce from our region.
Lorne
3. IPSOS
It seems everyone’s always talking about the next new dining option coming to Lorne, but for me, Dom Talimanidis’ old-school hospitality and consistently excellent food at Ipsos is my go-to. Seafood focussed, always fresh, traditional Greek, but with a modern sensibility. This is an example of my favourite way of eating – local, seasonal and in an environment that feels like home.
Colac
4. Dar Teta
We love visiting this cosy little restaurant, Granny’s House (Dar Teta), now proudly located in Colac. Ely Alkurd brings authentic Palestinian family recipes to life, with every dish bursting with flavour, freshness, and vibrant colour. Whether it’s a leisurely lunch or a hearty dinner, you’ll find meals prepared with care and served in a warm, welcoming space.
Previously nestled in Forrest, Dar Teta made the move to Colac in July 2024.

5. Otway Harvest Trail
Much of what makes our region great isn‘t in the town itself, but out on the farms surrounding us. The Otway Harvest Trail map is the key to accessing these open farm gates, farm stores, breweries and cellar doors. It’s a great way to get your hands on really fresh seasonal produce, including access to the many pick your own berry farms and organic growers in the region
