Let me help you plan your Great Ocean Road trip

I am here to help you explore the Great Ocean Road region, but I’m still learning and can make mistakes. For the best local advice, visit a visitor information centre. This is a large region, so plan for travel distances and your length of stay.

Hello

Hi! Let me help you plan your Great Ocean Road trip

Stay a While in Koroit

Slow down in a town shaped by heritage, community and wide-open landscapes

Set on the northern slopes of the dormant volcano Tower Hill, Koroit is the kind of place where time stretches out a little longer. Just a short drive from Warrnambool and Port Fairy, it’s an easy addition to a coastal itinerary but worth lingering for a night or two.

A town with a story to tell

Koroit is known as one of Australia’s most complete early Irish settlements. From its village layout to its churches and pubs, the influence of the Irish families who arrived in the 1800s is still deeply woven into daily life. The town itself takes its name from the Koroitch Gundidj people, the Traditional Owners of this land.

Koroit’s heritage isn’t just something you read about, it’s something you can walk through. The Koroit Heritage Trail links 32 historic buildings, offering a self-guided way to explore the town’s past at your own pace. It’s a simple but rewarding way to get your bearings and understand the layers of history that shape the streets today.

Plan your stay around a celebration

If your timing lines up, the Koroit Irish Festival is one of the most vibrant times to visit. Held across a weekend in late April or early May, it brings music, dance, storytelling and plenty of local flavour to the streets.

Expect a lively Saturday when the main street closes to traffic for a parade, market stalls and performances, alongside the much-loved Danny Boy competition. Earlier in the year, the Lake School of Celtic Music Song and Dance draws musicians and learners for a week of workshops and performances.

Nature on your doorstep

A stay in Koroit comes with easy access to one of the region’s most striking natural landscapes. Tower Hill Wildlife Reserve is a dormant volcanic crater just minutes from town, where walking trails wind past lakes, lava flows and abundant wildlife.

Keep an eye out for koalas, emus and kangaroos, and allow time for sunset as the views across the crater and wetlands are a highlight.

Back in town, the Koroit Botanical Gardens offer a quieter pace, with shady lawns and established trees perfect for a picnic or an afternoon wander.
