6 Reasons to Wake Up to Portland and Surrounds

1. Portland Bay Marina

ou will be in awe at the sheer size of the Portland Marina, you could sit for hours and watch the hustle and bustle of its port. However, fishing is its true drawcard whether it’s deep-sea fishing from the shore, taking a fishing charter in the hope of catching a prized Tuna or having some fun squid fishing – it is a fishing enthusiast dream. Another must-see location around Portland harbour are Nunns Beach 88 steps to a white sandy beach (don’t forget to take your stand up paddle board).

2. UNESCO world heritage listed Budj Bim

Budj Bim cultural landscape is made up of a series of locations including Lake Condah, Muldoons Trap Complex and the Tyrendarra Indigenous protected area. The Budj Bim cultural landscape features the earliest living example of aquaculture in the world, with a history of eel farming dating back over 6,000 years. The best way to experience the history and culture of the Gunditjmara people is via a guided tour with Budj Bim Tours.

3. Cape Bridgewater rugged cliffs, blowholes, sand dunes and a petrified forest

Cape Bridgewater will be a highlight of your adventure. A scenic 20-minute drive from Portland and you will feel like you are at the end of the earth. The Petrified Forest is a collection of hollow tubes of limestone called ‘solution pipes’ eroded by millions of years rainfall. They are breathtaking.

4. Cape Nelson Lighthouse

Learn about the history of the Cape Nelson Lighthouse built in 1884 by taking a lighthouse tour before taking in the views of the 6km lighthouse walk. You can wake up to the view of the lighthouse with the cosy cottage accommodation available. There is also a cafe with homemade treats!

5. Portland is packed with wildlife

View whales from the Lee Breakwater (July to October), gannets at Point Danger (breeding season is the best time to visit from August to February. Book a tour at the Portland Visitor Information Centre or for the more adventurous, why not go cage diving with some Australian Furr Seals?

6. The Great South West walk

Attention hikers! This world-class hiking experience includes rugged cliffs, sublime bays, tranquil forests, and pristine river, all within four National Parks. Ideally set up for shorter walks, day walks or for the experienced walkers tick the whole 250km loop off your bucket list.
