Aireys Inlet — sitting pretty between the bush and the beach.
This quiet coastal hamlet between Torquay to Lorne seduces visitors with beauty and tranquillity.
Nestled along the scenic Great Ocean Road, Aireys Inlet is a charming coastal village located just 17 kilometres east of Lorne and 50 kilometres south of Geelong. The drive to this picturesque destination is as stunning as the village itself, with breathtaking ocean views, rugged cliffs, and lush hinterland. Whether you’re coming from Melbourne or exploring the Great Ocean Road, Aireys Inlet is a perfect stop to soak in natural beauty and coastal charm.
Split Point Lighthouse
Aireys Inlet is often referred to as “the one with the lighthouse,” thanks to the Split Point Lighthouse. At 34 metres tall, it offers stunning views of the coastline and the surrounding Eagle Rock Marine Sanctuary. It was built in 1891 after a series of shipwrecks on this notorious stretch of coastline. Today the lighthouse continues its function as a beacon for vessels navigating the Bass Strait.
The lighthouse was made famous with the 90’s children’s comedy-drama series Round the Twist, which is about a family who lived in a lighthouse. Split Point Lighthouse and its surrounds were used as the location for all exterior shots.
Eagle Rock Marine Sanctuary
At the base of the Split Point Lighthouse lies the 17-hectare Eagle Rock Marine Sanctuary, teeming with diverse marine life. This sanctuary is a haven for snorkelers and scuba divers, with fascinating underwater ecosystems. Families will love exploring the rocky coves and sandy beaches, where children can discover an abundance of marine creatures in the rock pools.
The Memorial Arch
As you venture west along the Great Ocean Road, don’t miss the iconic Memorial Arch, a tribute to the returned servicemen who constructed this historic road from 1918 to 1932. Look for the stunning ‘Diggers’ sculpture, which commemorates the 75th Anniversary of the Great Ocean Road. This inspiring piece of art provides an opportunity for reflection on the 3,000 World War I veterans who built the road in memory of their fallen comrades.
Lighthouse Precinct Area
Take time to explore the Lighthouse Precinct, a charming area that includes the Split Point Lighthouse, Bark Hut, Allen Noble Sanctuary, and heritage-listed buildings. Enjoy breathtaking views from the reserve while learning about the region’s history.
