Situated west of Peterborough along the Great Ocean Road, Crofts Bay offers a quieter, scenic retreat within the larger Bay of Martyrs. This 1.2-kilometre stretch of coastline, nestled behind low dunes and bluffs, is ideal for beach walks, fishing, and laid-back beach days. Sheltered by offshore reefs and sea stacks, the bay enjoys calm waters and stunning coastal views. Crofts Bay offers a peaceful escape with ample space for picnics, beach walks, and relaxed swims. It’s a family-friendly spot with calm waters but lacks the surf thrills found at other locations along the coast.
Access to Crofts Bay is via a sandy, unmarked track just east of the main Bay of Islands car park. The sandy trail leads from a small car park, but it’s not suited to prams or wheelchairs. Additional car parks are located in the centre and at the western end of the bay, where steps descend to the beach.
Crofts Bay is a rewarding fishing spot with scenic surrounds. Although the rocky seabed and occasional seaweed may cause snags, the bay offers a chance to catch Australian salmon, trevally, snapper, sweep, and gummy shark. Locals often launch fishing tinnies from caves tucked under the bluff at the western end. The reefs, accessible at high tide, are especially productive.
