The Aire River Crossing has 5 free camping sites, located in a secluded and peaceful rainforest setting within the Great Otway National Park, surrounded by majestic eucalypts and tree ferns.
Adjacent to the sites is the Aire River where there is room to sit and enjoy the lush forest and watch the water flow over the rocks. It’s a magical and serene spot. If you’re keen on fishing, you might catch brown trout on one of the river bends or in a rockpool.
Parks Victoria has provided drop toilets with a water tank and tap (water requires treatment for drinking). There is some additional parking near the campsites. No fires or dogs are permitted a this site.
Because Aire Crossing requires a bit of effort to access it is usually quiet, but weekends, school holidays and public holidays during the summer or Easter can be busy and you may need to get there early to guarantee a campsite. Aire Crossing is not suitable for caravans.
Aire Crossing is close to Triplet Falls, the Otway Fly, the Redwood Forest and Beauchamp and Hopetoun Falls, providing opportunities for lots of stunning short walks in the Otways. It can be accessed along Aire Settlement Road from the Great Ocean Road about 40 minutes west of Apollo Bay or along Wait-A-While Road, about 10-15 minutes after Lavers Hill along the Lavers Hill-Beech Forest Road. Both access routes are unsealed and can be rough and muddy after poor weather when a 4WD is recommended.
