Galleries Worth the Detour Along the Great Ocean Road
Whether you're a dedicated gallery-goer or someone who just wandered in out of curiosity, the region's art spaces have a way of drawing you in and making you want to stay longer. Set aside some extra time, take the detours, and let us introduce you to a few of our favourites.
Warrnambool Art Gallery
If you’re heading to Warrnambool — and you really should be — the Warrnambool Art Gallery is an absolute can’t-miss. One of regional Victoria’s most celebrated public galleries, it’s the kind of place that surprises you with the depth and quality of its collection. It’s free to enter, welcoming to everyone, and well worth building an afternoon around.
Make sure you pair your visit with a wander along Warrnambool’s foreshore and a bite to eat in town — there’s plenty of reasons to stay the night.
Nirranda Arts
Nirranda Arts Studio is one of those places you’ll be glad you made the detour for. Housed in a beautifully preserved mechanics hall built in 1896, the space has been transformed into a gallery and working studio that feels unlike anywhere else along the Great Ocean Road.
Specialising in contemporary silk painting, couture, design, drawing, painting, clay and sculpture, Nirranda Arts is a feast for the senses. Browse original handmade works, prints, gifts and souvenirs, or better yet, get involved yourself — the studio regularly runs workshops and events that are well worth timing your visit around.
Studio 75 Art Studio, Killarney
If you’re spending time around Warrnambool or Port Fairy, make sure you add Studio 75 to your list. Just ten minutes from both towns and two minutes from Killarney beach, this vibrant studio and gallery is well worth the stop.
Opened by artists Ricky Schembri and Alexandra Davis, Studio 75 gives you a genuine look into the creative process. Wander through their working studio spaces, see the work up close and browse a collection of pastels available for sale. Ricky’s work is rooted in the landscapes of South West Victoria, capturing local scenes from Koroit and Killarney.
Studio 75 is open by appointment, so give them a call before you visit. We love combining a stop here with a walk down to Killarney beach, then heading into Port Fairy or Warrnambool for dinner and an overnight stay.
The Great Ocean Road region's art scene rewards the curious and the unhurried. Each of these galleries tells a different story, and together they paint a picture of a creative community that's thriving far beyond the city limits. Start planning your gallery trail and give yourself the time to explore and we promise you'll want to come back for more.
