If you’re bringing your four-legged friend on your visit to Warrnambool, this will undoubtedly be its favourite spot.
Between April 1 and November 30 dogs are allowed off-leash on the east side of the river where they can go for a dip in the river and play on the sand… just don’t forget your bags!
Six fishing jetties can be found just up-river with bream, mulloway and perch the most common species landed.
In Autumn, short-finned eels congregate at the closed river mouth, patiently waiting for rising water levels to grant them passage to the Southern Ocean. Some are more impatient than others and can be seen slithering across the wet sand to begin their 3000km journey to the Coral Sea in order to spawn.
Accessibility:
A public access hoist has been installed at the Hopkins River jetty off Simpson Street, next to the EJ King Park, to assist wheelchair users to transfer safely in and out of boats. The hoist is free to use and is available to approved users who have attended a hoist safety induction session.
An accessible fishing platform available (accessed by a ramp with steel hand rails) can be found at the corner of Simpson and Otway Streets.
