Adventurers Cam and Elise Greenwood spent three days on the Great Ocean Walk, starting at Blanket Bay and finishing at Johanna Beach. They were shuttled and received food drop offs from Walk 91.
The Great Ocean Road is one of our favourite stretches of coastline to explore. It’s a drive we’ve done countless times but we’ve always been too focused on surfing on chasing waterfalls to do any long walks like the Great Ocean Walk. It may not be the most technical hike, but it definitely has some incredible views and we have wanted to give it a go for a long time. So we decided to clear three days and this is how it all went down…
Day 1: Blanket Bay to Cape Otway
After being dropped off in Blanket Bay by Walk 91, we started the journey towards Cape Otway.
We were blessed with blue skies and soul-filling solitude as we walking through a host of changing landscapes before coming across a really cool beach with a river crossing.
After putting our shoes back on, we made our way up a few hills before yet some more ridiculous views on our way to Cape Otway.
After arrival, we thought why not check out the Cape Otway Lightstation for some more, seriously beautiful views!
We then made the short walk up to our campsite, which tucked away in a beautiful nook off the path.
We ate our dinner as we watched the sky change colours on sunset, with just the sounds of the birds and the trees. Safe to say, we had the best sleep!
In the morning, we enjoyed our breakfast and some fresh camp coffee before setting off for Aire River. This part of the walk featured some pretty wild landscapes.
We opted for the beach route about half way through the walk to Aire River, which was pretty fun to break it up.
We also noticed a lot of rubbish washed up from the big swells, which Elise happily picked up and turned into a fashion bag before we made our way back to the trail.
We were met with some rain as we walked into the beautiful camp ground of Aire River, so we happily set up camp and called it a day.
The last day of our journey took us across high cliffs and beautiful bushland before the home stretch across Johanna Beach, which was definitely one of our favourites.
Upon arrival at the Johanna Beach we were pleasantly surprised to see the legends at Walk 91 waiting for us to take us back to our car in Apollo Bay.
As the photos show, we found some serious wilderness and solitude along the walk. It felt super remote which is something we always love and why we will definitely come back to do this walk again. To trade the busy pace of every day life for a few days walking and camping along this pristine coastline with no modern distractions or noise is an experience that is always worth the effort.
Now to find when we can to this again…
