About

Set high in the soft, damp mists that enfold the Otway Ranges, Wanawong is a beautiful hillside garden of over one hectare, flanked by fields and bushland and filled with local birds. Located in Barongarook, this country garden with spectacular views was originally designed and laid out by owner Janet Hopkins in 1975. Nearly 50 years later, she is still passionately tending her patch.

At the front of the home, breathtaking views provide an opportunity for quiet contemplation. A wide bed of shade-loving plants below the main balcony opens up to a series of terraces of massed rhododendrons, magnolias, maples, azaleas, and flowering cherries underplanted with bluebells, epimediums, ajugas and symphytum.

A soft, winding path guides visitors down the hillside to an enchanting glade of tree ferns and a small pond with water-loving plants featuring a magnificent gunnera tinctoria. A towering dawn redwood, nothofagus, davidia, cornus, ginko and rimu, add to the atmosphere.

The productive gardens keep the owners fed year-round. Raspberries, brambleberries, and blueberries give huge crops, along with the espaliered fruit trees. The vegetable garden benefits from the large amounts of compost created by Janet’s husband, David.
