The Lighthouse Classic returns in January 2026, inviting people across Australia and beyond to walk in support of cancer research.
Now in its sixth year, the event was created by Janet Jones OAM in 2021 to shine a light on what causes cancer and how it can be treated more effectively. Janet, who faced three battles with cancer over 33 years, launched the walk to support the Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute, Australia’s only regional, community-funded cancer research institute. Following her passing later that year, Janet’s family has continued the Lighthouse Classic in her honour.
Participants can take part in one of two ways. An official group walk will be held on Sunday 18 January at 9:00 AM, starting and finishing at the iconic Aireys Inlet Lighthouse on the Surf Coast. Walkers can choose a 10 kilometre return walk or a shorter 4 kilometre option, making the event accessible for families and casual walkers.
Alternatively, people can walk anytime throughout January, anywhere in Australia or overseas. Many choose to walk to a lighthouse or a place of personal significance, reflecting on someone they love who has been touched by cancer.
Whether you stroll, stride or set yourself a New Year challenge, the Lighthouse Classic is a meaningful way to start the year, honouring a legacy and helping change lives.
