Follow the breadcrumbs

Country bakeries offer something special and genuinely down-to-earth you that just can’t find in the city.

Enjoy the comfort that comes with that special recipe of handmade pies and pasties, cakes and slices combined with the pride of the proprietors who will serve you with a smile every single time. Victoria’s Volcanic Lakes and Plains is no different “ in fact we think it punches well above its weight in the bakery stakes! Whether your weakness is a meat pie, a vanilla slice, or all those carbs you’ll devour in delicious sourdoughs — there’s something for all tastes. Here’s our town-by-town highlights…

Terang

The Terang Country Bakery is a sure bet for rumbling tummies “ you’ll get fresh sourdough, delicious pies made daily, plus a selection of sweet treats to suit traditional tastes like Hedgehog or Vanilla Slice. Take a seat out the front and watch the world go by.

The Little Acorn Cafe is owned and managed by Cooinda, supporting mainstream jobs for people living with a disability in our community. Stop in here for a chat with staff and a Devonshire tea.

Cobden

Pick up some picnic supplies from the Cobden Bakery and then throw a blanket out to enjoy them in the pretty setting by the Cobden Lake. For something sweet and a seriously great brew, stop in at the coffee window at The Blue Wren, step inside to browse the retail clothing shop. Enjoy some craft, music, coffee and cake at then newly opened Alderwood Manor.

Mortlake

Outside Cornwall, we’re willing to bet you be hard pressed finding a better pastie than the ones they make at Clarke’s in Mortlake. Clarke’s pies are revered in regional Victoria and they continue to be produced as they always have been in Mortlake. Clarke’s also bake a mean party pie, if you’re looking for a car snack while driving through!

Koroit

The Koroit Bakehouse Crater Cafe is a great spot to pick up lunch and a sweet treat while exploring the region. In business for over 25 years, these guys run a smooth ship!

Lismore

Tucked beside the iconic Lismore water tower mural “The Dancing Brolgas” painted by Jimmi Buscombe, and next to the golf course, Fairway Coffee and Eatery is a great little spot for breakfast, lunch or evening meals on weekends. Please your crowd with a great selection of cakes and slices.

It’s hard to choose, however if you are after generous portions go with the Camperdown Bakery, and at the Loaf, you will find a pretty selection of raw and vegan options.

Lake Purrumbete
