Let me help you plan your Great Ocean Road trip

I am here to help you explore the Great Ocean Road region, but I’m still learning and can make mistakes. For the best local advice, visit a visitor information centre. This is a large region, so plan for travel distances and your length of stay.

Hello

Hi! Let me help you plan your Great Ocean Road trip

The Best Dog-Friendly Spots in the Otways

Explore the Otways with Your Furry Friend

If you're planning a trip to the Otways and don’t want to leave your dog behind, you’re in luck. The Otway Ranges and surrounding towns offer plenty of dog-friendly options. Think walking trails, beachside stays, pet-friendly cafes, and lush open spaces perfect for four-legged adventurers. Here's your go-to guide for exploring the dog-friendly side of the Otways.

Walks and Attractions

Lake Elizabeth is one of the Otways’ most magical places. Dogs are welcome on-lead on the Lake Elizabeth walking track, a 4–5 km circuit through towering trees, mossy gullies, and misty forest.

The track to Stevensons Falls is an easy 1.5 km return walk along a well-maintained path. Dogs are permitted on-lead throughout the picnic area, campground, and waterfall track.

A quiet forested area just outside Forrest, Barwon Reservoir offers a tranquil space to walk your dog on-lead and soak up the sounds of nature.

Another stunner where on-lead dogs are allowed. The trail to Beauchamp Falls is a moderate 3 km return hike through dense forest, with some steep and slippery sections.

Where to Stay

In the heart of the Otways, Forrest Holiday Park offers a warm welcome to pets and their humans.Pet-friendly cabins and campsites are available by arrangement, and the township of Forrest – with its brewery, general store, and scenic strolls – is just a short walk away.

If your Otways getaway includes time by the beach, Marengo Family Caravan Park just outside Apollo Bay is a great choice. The park is pet-friendly all year round on campsites and by arrangement in some cabins. It backs onto Marengo Beach, which allows on-lead dogs (be sure to check there are no limitations during peak times) and offers a peaceful place to watch the waves (and sometimes whales!).

Travel Tips for Exploring the Otways with Your Dog

  • Stick to dog-friendly zones. National parks have strict regulations to protect native wildlife. Use the Parks Victoria website or local visitor centres to check access.
  • Pack the essentials. Always carry water, waste bags, and a leash—some trails and towns require dogs to be on-lead at all times.
  • Respect local wildlife. The Otways are home to echidnas, koalas, and wallabies—keep your dog close and quiet to avoid stress or disturbance.
  • Plan ahead. Dog-friendly stays book up quickly, especially in peak season.
