Getting to Lake Elizabeth

Lake Elizabeth is nestled in the Great Otway National Park, approximately 165 kilometres from Melbourne—a scenic two-hour drive. Just over six kilometres from the charming town of Forrest (a hub for mountain bikers). The lake is also about 40 kilometres north of Apollo Bay, making it a perfect stop when exploring the Great Ocean Road.

Things to do at Lake Elizabeth

Lake Elizabeth is a perfect destination for families, nature photographers, and outdoor enthusiasts. The calm waters are adorned with petrified tree trunks, and the reflections of the surrounding forest make for stunning photography. You might also spot the playful platypus, especially during the calm hours of dawn or dusk.

Birdlife is very active in the lake area. Expect to see wrens, robins, grey shrike thrush, along with waterbirds on the lake itself. Satin bowerbirds can be seen around the campground, and pink robins and rufous bristlebirds are also found in the area. The surrounding forest is alive with activity!

Enjoy activities such as walking, kayaking, canoeing, and for the more adventurous, hire a mountain bike in Forrest to explore the many bike trails that wind through the region. For a guided experience, join a wildlife spotting tour. Nearby, you can also explore the towering Redwoods or visit the breathtaking Hopetoun Falls.

Camping at Lake Elizabeth

For a true nature escape, the Lake Elizabeth Campground is just a 1km walk from the lake itself, ideal for those wanting to experience the lake’s serenity at dawn or dusk. The campground is suited to tents only, offering 20 campsites nestled among tall eucalypts and away from mobile reception—perfect for a digital detox.

Campground amenities include non-flush toilets, shared fire pits, and picnic tables. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a lead. For those looking to get closer to nature, night walks to spot glow worms are a family favourite, and early risers may be lucky enough to see the resident platypus. These sites can be booked via Parks Victoria.

Walking Trails at Lake Elizabeth 

Stroll along the almost hidden pathway leading to the lake, surrounded by ferns and the calming flow of the East Barwon River. The main walk to Lake Elizabeth is an easy, just-under-1-kilometre trek suitable for all fitness levels. For the more adventurous, the Lake Elizabeth Loop Walk extends around the lake’s perimeter, offering 4.7 kilometres of beautiful scenery with lookout points along the way. Walking anticlockwise is recommended for the best views.
