Discover Red Rock Lookout

Take in the sweeping views over Lake Corangamite, Victoria’s largest permanent inland lake, and the scattered volcanic peaks of South West Victoria from the Red Rock Lookout. Just 12 kilometres from Colac, this spot offers a fascinating glimpse into Australia’s geological history and a spectacular vantage point over a landscape shaped by volcanic activity.

Red Rock itself is one of Australia’s youngest volcanoes, part of a volcanic plain estimated to be 8,000 years old, and is the third largest in the world. Its complex terrain includes overlapping maars, scoria cones, and small lava flows, a testament to the powerful geological forces that shaped the region.

Getting to Red Rock

Located just 12 kilometres from Colac, the Red Rock Lookout is easily accessible by car, making it a perfect spot for a short getaway. The scenic drive will take you through the beautiful rural landscape of South West Victoria, with sweeping views of farmland and volcanic peaks along the way. Once you arrive, the lookout provides a stunning panoramic view of Lake Corangamite, Victoria’s largest permanent inland lake, and the surrounding volcanic landscape.

Lake Corangamite, formed by ancient lava flows that redirected watercourses, is now three times saltier than seawater and attracts migratory water birds each spring and summer. From the lookout, you can see up to seven crater lakes and almost 40 distinct eruption points within the Red Rock complex—making it one of the world’s most impressive volcanic landscapes.

The lookout is accessible by car, with toilets, playgrounds, and BBQ facilities available just 500 metres from the lookout.
