Picnic Spots

There are many magnificent picnic spots  within the Otways where you can enjoy the serenity of the bush or  crashing waves at the beach. Most have excellent facilities, including  tables, fireplaces and toilets. When you visit, please take your  rubbish home.

PARADISE: Situated close by the Barham River, only 7km from Apollo Bay. This delightful area sits under a canopy of trees and ferns.
Facilities: toilets, picnic tables and fireplaces.

ELLIOTT RIVER: Just 8km out of Apollo Bay towards Lavers Hill. Facilities: toilets and picnic tables.

WEST BARWON RESERVOIR: The well-maintained picnic area is off the Skenes Creek-Colac Road near Forrest. Facilities: Free gas barbecues, shelter, toilets. The walk along the dam wall provides superb views and bird life abounds.

GREY RIVER RESERVE: From Kennett River, follow the sign to Grey River Road. The picnic area is in a scenic reserve, home to koalas. Facilities: tables, fireplaces.

LOVES CREEK: Off the Colac-Lavers Hill Road at Kawarren. The pretty spot set among tall trees is only about 15 minutes south of Colac. Facilities: Picnic tables, toilets. Nearby is the Old Beechy Line where there are also picnic tables.

LAKE ELIZABETH: Turn off the Colac-Skenes Creek Road at Forrest and follow the signs to Lake Elizabeth. There are a number of walks that reveal the beauty and wildlife of the area. Facilities: Picnic tables, toilets.

RED ROCK: Turn off the Princes Highway a few kilometres west of Colac and follow the signs to Alvie. The lookouts provide sweeping views of one of the worlds largest volcanic plains and its lakes. Facilities: Barbecues, picnic tables, lookouts.

LAKE COLAC: You can enjoy a picnic or a barbecue by the shores of Lake Colac. Facilities: Barbecues, picnic tables, toilets.

BIRREGURRA PARK: Off Main Street, in the heart of town. The local community has created an attractive park on the towns former village common. Facilities: Barbecues, picnic tables, shelters, rotunda, play equipment.

COLAC VISITOR INFORMATION CENTRE: At the foot of the Information Centre is a pleasant shady picnic spot. Free BBQs and toilet facilities are available.

LIONS PARK, COLAC: On the Barongarook Creek, 50 meters east of the Visitor Information Centre. Free BBQs, picnic tables and toilet facilities are available.

COLAC BOTANIC GARDENS: On the south bank of Lake Colac. Free BBQs, toilet facilities, a modern well-equipped playground and a boat ramp are provided.

MEREDITH PARK: Ten kilometres from Colac on the north bank of Lake Colac. A popular fishing spot offering a picnic area with toilets, fireplaces and a boat ramp.

MEMORIAL SQUARE, COLAC: In the centre of town under the magnificent elm trees. Free BBQs, picnic tables and toilet facilities.

GELLIBRAND: 20 minutes south of Colac. Picnic area located in the township of Gellibrand. BBQ, picnic tables and toilet facilities available.

MELBA GULLY: West of Lavers Hill on the Great Ocean Road. A beautiful rainforest walk. Toilets, picnic tables and free gas BBQs. ( No dogs)

BEECH FOREST: Covered shelter with picnic tables and toilets.

SKENES CREEK: Picnic tables overlooking the beach and adjacent creek.

FORREST: Station Street Forrest (off main street). Undercover free gas BBQs, tables, chairs, playground & skateramp, tennis courts and tank water tap.

KENNETT RIVER: Turn left off Great Ocean Road at the Kennett River General Store. Turn right onto the road that runs parallel to the Great Ocean Road. Follow this to the picnic ground. Picnic tables on the river adjacent to the beach. Good fishing.


Other picnic areas are located within waterfall reserves around the region.
