Portarlington

Portarlington

LOCATION
Portarlington is at the northern-most tip of The Bellarine, between Indented Head and Clifton Springs. It is about 31km from Geelong city.

THINGS TO DO:

Local Harvest, Local Eateries: Famous for its sublime locally-harvested mussels, the town has a similar reputation for fine dining, with excellent restaurants and cafés lining the main street and on the pier. The pubs are friendly and welcoming too.

• Enjoy The Outdoors: There are plenty of boat ramps for those keen on fishing and sea-travel, lovely shady parks on the foreshore and a very scenic golf course.

• Heritage Mill: The four-storey Portarlington Mill was built in 1857 to grind flour. The person responsible for its construction, Mr T H Widdicombe, lived two doors down and his home is now a showcase for antiques and collectables. Open 12pm to 4pm Saturday and Sunday from mid September to May. Closed on Christmas Day.

NAME ORIGINS
Portarlington was surveyed in 1850 and named Drayton but was renamed in 1851 in honour of Lord Arlington (another claim is that it was named after an Irish village, owing to the predominance of Irish settlers in the area).

With the Southern Hemisphere’s largest seaside holiday resort on its foreshore, Portarlington has every reason to be popular.

One of the largest villages on The Bellarine, Portarlington has excellent dining facilities and services and is central to many of the outstanding wineries of the region.

Spend some time discovering the shops, or exploring the local market held on the last Sunday of every month.

The boutique accommodation offers views overlooking Port Phillip Bay, from which you can see Melbourne’s skyline on a clear day.
