As the name suggests, it is positioned on the point overlooking the mouth of Port Phillip Bay, known as ‘The Rip’.
•Dining Experiences: Point Lonsdale is well serviced by retail and most items you’d need on holiday are available. There are some wonderful cafés and top quality restaurants in the main shopping strip. Brunch and al fresco dining are Point Lonsdale’s signature activities.
• Around Town: The way to get around is on foot, with the foreshore offering a scenic walk. It makes a good cycle track too, but be careful as it can get busy with pedestrian traffic at certain times. Take the 3.4 kilometre walk to Edward Point State Fauna Reserve to see a variety of interesting birdlife. If golf is your game, the Lonsdale Golf Club is sure to meet your expectations. The clubhouse is licensed and the locals are welcoming.
The ocean foreshore has high points with breathtaking views over the rip and a cave, below the lighthouse, reputed to have been used by William Buckley during his time in the wilderness. Past the Point, inside the bay, Lonsdale Bay beach has beautiful, sheltered and clean swimming areas, a camping ground, an old bowling club and the town’s small shopping street.
The foreshore reserve runs eastwards along the isthmus to Queenscliff. Big ships, smaller boats and yachts constantly move past the foreshore through the Rip. House prices have risen sharply in recent years as city dwellers have recognised the extraordinary geography of this resort town - ocean beaches, a point overlooking the mouth of the bay with protected bay beaches.
Sheltered behind the point is the front beach, a delightful family beach with shallow rockpools, gentle surf and even the occasional resident seal! The back beach is the place for wave seekers.
There is a great new playground just a few steps up from the front beach, opposite the shops on the main street. If you enjoy ship spotting, you’ll love Point Lonsdale and ‘The Rip’ view lookout.
Other options include chartering a fishing boat, snorkelling off the front beach or strolling along the sand.
