If you’re looking for the best place in Warrnambool to catch the sunset, Thunder Point is hard to beat. Perched on the coastline just off MacDonald Street, this spot offers some of the most spectacular coastal views in the area.
The car park at Thunder Point faces directly out towards the ocean, making it a great spot to take in the scenery—even on chilly days, when you can enjoy the view from the comfort of your car. For those seeking the full experience, the viewing platform provides an even better vantage point to watch the waves roll in and the sun sink into the Southern Ocean.
Thunder Point Walk
A 4.2-km out-and-back trail. Generally considered an easy route, it takes an average of 1-2 hours to complete. This is a popular trail for hiking and walking, but you can still enjoy some solitude during quieter times of day. The trail is open year-round. Mixture of trail, boardwalk and sand. Starting from the Breakwater car park, this scenic trail weaves past the Merri River estuary, peaceful Stingray Bay, and across a footbridge to Thunder Point Coastal Reserve. Explore sandstone cliffs, hidden inlets, and rockpools along the way.
Continue through coastal vegetation to Pickering Point for panoramic views of Lady Bay, the Merri River, and the Southern Ocean. The trail ends at Shelly Beach.
