Set amongst the picturesque volcanic plains of Eastern Maar Country and the tranquil rural town of Colac, the Colac Bird Reserve comprises 5.5 hectares of wetland area and is located at the lake end of Church Street in Colac. This reserve provides important feeding, resting and breeding habitat for over 20 species of waterbirds, including a number of migratory species. Other wetland inhabitants include frogs, snakes, invertebrates and fish species as well as water plants such as sedges, rushes and water-loving trees. Aside from providing important habitat for these plants and animals, wetlands protect and improve water quality and play a major role in nutrient recycling.
